I started my first business in my twenties so I could afford an engagement ring. I got the ring, and I got the girl. Then the business grew, and so did our family… four kids. By every metric that’s supposed to matter, I was winning. I had three different companies on the Inc 500 list in the same year.
I was also burnt out and miserable.
I was working 70-hour weeks, missing dinners, watching my kids grow up in the margins of my calendar, and telling myself I was doing it for them. Until my wife Emily looked at me one day and said something I’ve never forgotten: “You can keep doing what you’re doing, but you can’t pretend like you’re doing it for us anymore.”
