Let's Build Your Company’s “Operating System”

The Most Successful Companies In The World All Have One Thing In Common. They all have an “operating system.” During the Scalable OS Accelerator, we’ll build your company’s “OS” in just 8 modules AND give you the support you need to ensure it’s done right.

Last October, I set a goal to move my family to Costa Rica for 2 months. Setting the goal to develop our OS to the point where I could leave for 2 months, and then actually leaving, was one of the greatest things I could have done. We just completed our first QSP Session. I hosted it on Zoom from Costa Rica.
Josh Taylor
Founder & CEO, Product EVO
Growth last quarter was 218% over the previous year and we are breaking all kinds of sales records, but more importantly, we are making serious profit! Our biggest growth has been a direct reflection of the strategies and OS put in place as a result of this program.

Co-Owner, Francis Plumbing
ScalableOS has given me real clarity on my offers and how the business operating system should support them. This clarity has made me hire 3 members of staff. The sense of personal relief that I don't have to do everything on my own now is amazing.

Tell Me If This Sounds Familiar...

From the desk of Ryan Deiss
March 1st, 2023

Fellow entrepreneur,

Tell me if this sounds familiar…

Your inbox is overflowing with week-old messages only you can reply to, and new ones are piling up daily. You stopped trying to plan your day or even keep a to-do list months ago because your days are spent putting out “fires” or addressing the constant “shoulder taps” and “Gotta minutes?” that come in from your team.

There’s no time to read, think, or work on the crucial but non-urgent projects you love doing, and that actually make an impact, and most days, it feels like you’re everyone else’s executive assistant.

If you eat lunch, it’s on the run or at your desk, and you know your health is suffering.

You’re exhausted at the end of each day, but it never seems like anything significant gets done. At best, you’re just spinning plates, but you quietly wonder how long you can keep it together.

When you get home, your family complains that you’re working too much and never around. It stings, especially when you remember you’re supposedly doing all of this for them.

But what if it could be different?

What if, instead, your average day looked more like this…

You wake up, check your email, and the only item in your inbox is a link to the updated Company Scorecard. You review it, and aside from a few “Yellow” areas, all the key metrics are “Green” across the board.

You start to ask about the metrics that are behind target (i.e. the “Yellow” metrics) but then you notice your team has already included an explanation of the steps they’re taking to get those numbers back on track by the end of the week.

Knowing today is taken care of, you’re free to read, think, and strategize about the future.

As a general rule, you don’t attend any meetings except for the Monthly Business Reviews and Quarterly Sprint Planning sessions, and aside from check-ins with your leadership team, you’re free to focus on the work you love doing that makes the biggest impact.

Best of all, you have deep, meaningful relationships with your family and friends, and you have ample time to enjoy personal hobbies as well as trips and experiences with the ones you love.

Of these two scenarios, which feels the most true for you?

If the first scenario hits a little too close to home and the second scenario sounds like an unachievable “entrepreneurial dream,” then I have good news…

The “entrepreneurial dream” scenario I just described can be your reality, but to achieve it you must first confront a harsh truth that most founders will never learn and even fewer will admit.

I call it “The Founders Curse.”

The Founder’s Curse

The Founders Curse states that the more valuable you are to your business, the less valuable your business is.

Read that again because it’s so, so important.

The more valuable YOU are to your business, the less valuable your business is.

This truth can be difficult to hear.

As entrepreneurs we not only believe we can do it all, but in the back of our minds we believe we must do it all because, frankly, we always have done it all.

And so far, (well, in the early days, at least), doing it all worked just fine. Heck, it’s what got us where we are today!

But now, “doing it all” isn’t working as well as it once did, is it?

This is why I call it “The Founder’s Curse.”

The skills, talents, and abilities that were required in the early days of our businesses – the ones that enabled us to succeed where others failed – are the same skills, talents, and abilities that will eventually cause our companies to stall out and for us to burn out.

Because what no one tells us is that the operating system required to launch a business is not the same operating system we need to scale our business.

What is an “Operating System?”

Whether you realize it or not, your company is already running on an operating system (an OS).

Just like a computer, you must always run the most up-to-date version of your company OS if you want to maximize output and prevent the systems (both you and your company) from crashing.

So, what exactly is an operating system, anyway? According to my sources (read: Google), the definition of an operating system is:

op·er·at·ing sys·tem
/ˈäpəˌrādiNG ˌsistəm/

A set of algorithms and a common language that enables different components to communicate with one other in support of the desired outputs of a machine.

In other words, it’s what allows you to keep your email, calendar, Zoom, and 64 internet tabs open simultaneously.

If you look closely, you’ll see there are three components listed in this definition that make up any operating system: 1) a set of algorithms 2) a common language, and 3) desired outputs. So how do these three components relate to your business operating system? I’ll break it down…

Set of Algorithms

Algorithms exist in the form of checklists, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and company policies, as well as many of the unwritten, tribal rules that govern the organization.

Common Language

The typical way businesses establish a Common Language is through regular meetings. But metrics scorecards and communication tools like email, Slack, and Zoom also make up the Common Language.

Desired Outputs

“Desired outputs” are the actual work product of a company. They might be called goals or objectives, or they may even be contained in your mission or vision statements.

So, if all businesses have a set of algorithms (even if the rules are unwritten), a Common Language (even if it’s choppy and inefficient), and desired objectives (even if they’re loosely defined and known only to the CEO), then all businesses have an operating system.

The problem is, most businesses are running on legacy operating systems.

They’re attempting to power a modern 3D gaming machine with a hacked version of Windows 95, and they’re wondering why they keep experiencing the entrepreneurial equivalent of the “blue screen of death.”

So, what’s the solution?

Remember the Founder’s Curse? “The more valuable you are to your business, the less valuable your business is.” The key to breaking the Founder’s Curse, to becoming “less valuable” to your business, is the same for overcoming burnout and the preventing the entrepreneurial “blue screen of death.” You need to get scalable, and to do that…

…you need to upgrade your company operating system.

Is your company’s operating system due for an update?

When designed well, a company’s operating system can scale to 40,031 restaurants, 1.9 million employees, and $9.8 billion in revenue…

Can you guess the company?

“The ‘Speedee Service System’ applied the principles of production line manufacture to fast food and formed the foundation of what Ray Kroc would later leverage to create the world’s largest food outlet chain…” (1)

In fact, McDonald’s original mascot wasn’t a clown named “Ronald,” but a hamburger man named “Speedee.” That’s how important the SYSTEM was to the McDonald’s business!

But the problem is for many businesses, their operating system is less like McDonald’s and more like…

  1. It’s become background noise rather than a recipe for success.
  2. It’s a spider web of several different systems creating chaos and confusion.
  3. It’s forgotten about (or outdated at best).

So, is your company’s operating system due for an update? You’ll know if…

  • Plans are loosely defined and rarely followed
  • Work is chaotic, and nothing important ever seems to get done aside from the things that are “on fire”
  • Team members need to constantly be told what to do, and no one seems to know what’s going on!
  • Meetings feel like a waste of time
  • Profits are low…even on higher sales
  • You’re burned out and ready to quit…

With a scalable operating system in place, you’ll…

  • Get vital business tasks out of your head and off of your todo list
  • Eliminate mistakes and wasted time in your organization while empowering your employees to do their best work
  • Learn how to “clone” your best people so you can get more done with fewer headaches
  • Set strategic goals you’ll actually stick to
  • Create clear accountability across all critical elements of the business, and…
  • Go on vacation without checking your email or worrying about going out of business

Are you ready to reclaim the time & freedom you set out on this journey to obtain?

Everything You Need To Get Scale-ABLE

During the 8-module Scalable OS Accelerator, I’ll show you behind the scenes of how I’ve scaled 5 different businesses to over 8-figures (including 3 that made it on the Inc 500 list simultaneously) all while…

  • Buying our dream vacation home
  • Spending more of my summer at my beach house (plus taking a handful of other vacations)…
  • Never missing a soccer practice or piano recital (and I have 4 kids)…
  • And spending every Friday on date night with my wife.

I don’t say this to brag. I say it so you know that it’s possible to have it all, without sacrificing it all.

All you need is an operating system that will empower your company to drives itself to success without you having to be involved every second of every day.

Together we will Implement 8 key systems in place that allow you to:

  • Save hours of mental energy obsessing about the wrong things…
  • Gain personal freedom to take time off with your family…
  • Seize new opportunities to strategically grow your net worth, and…
  • Set your company on a fast-track to a higher valuation for a 7 or 8 figure exit!

You’ll leave with real results including your very own Scalable OS Dashboard (don’t worry, we provide you all the templates and our brand new builder tool) and renewed clarity on exactly where you company needs to go to provide YOU the wealth and freedom YOU deserve.

If that sounds like a worth goal, then I’d like to invite you to join us and enroll today.

You’re Just 6 Critical Tools Away From A Business That Can Run With Or Without You!

Now that you know what an operating system is, here’s how we will build yours…

Remember, an operating system is a set of algorithms and a common language that enables different components to communicate with one another to support the desired outputs of a “machine.”

These three components: the set of algorithms, common language, and desired outputs, form the basis of a simple model we created called the Scalable Operating System Framework that outlines all the assets you need to build and install an upgraded OS…

FIRST, we’ll document the “set of ALGORITHMS” that make your business run. These include your Value Engines, Business Playbooks, and Team Hierarchy and Accountability, or the High-Output Team Canvas, as we like to call it.

SECOND, we’ll define and develop your company’s “COMMUNICATION architecture.” This includes the Scorecards that you use to know if you’re behind or on track, as well as the Meeting Rhythm and Communication Architecture that lays out how information is shared and spread throughout the organization.

FINALLY, we’ll clarify your company’s “desired OUTPUTS” using a proprietary tool called a Clarity Compass so your people and systems are all aligned and motivated to achieve a common goal.

How do we accomplish that? With 6 proprietary tools that power the model and will enable you to build a fully-customized operating system that will scale as your business scales. Here they are…

Value Engine Planner

Visualize How Your Company Creates Value

Value Engines are the first tool that makes up the broader Scalable Operating System Framework.

They are a visual representation of how you create value at the company by either acquiring a customer or fulfilling on the promises made to the customer.

H.O.T. Canvas

Who Does What in Your Company

A High Output Team (H.O.T.) is defined by three things: a clear purpose, a clear context, and clear areas of accountability.

Our H.O.T. Canvas helps us identify who is uniquely responsible for critical value creation processes in our business and how they fit into the larger context of the business.

Company Scorecard

Measure Your Most Important Metrics

A Company Scorecard is the first step in establishing a common language and allows you and your team to gauge the performance of your business.

Our Company Scorecard helps us measure our weekly performance, define what "good" is, and can help us make adjustments so we stay on track to our 12Q targets.

Clarity Compass

Clarify Your Company’s Purpose and Direction

How do you scale culture? Better yet, how do you scale the best qualities of your top people?

Our Clarity Compass creates alignment and clarity in our business. It helps us clarify and communicate our why and our mission, vision, and values, and create alignment throughout your entire organization. Additionally, it helps scale the attitudes and behaviors of your best people to you can scale culture and replicate your A-players.

12Q Planning Grid

Set Your Company’s 3 Year Target

Can you tell the future? The 12Q Planning Canvas can help you envision it.

It helps craft a truly compelling vision for our company that is specific and measurable through identifying targets and keeping us on track towards those goals.

QSP Canvas

Highly-Effective Planning Meetings

The Quarterly Sprint Planning (QSP) Canvas helps us stay on track towards our 12Q goal and, quite literally, get on the same page.

It helps us plan our quarter through identifying a theme, strategic pillars, critical projects and key initiatives, and our success metrics for the quarter.

By the time we finish, you’ll have a fully customized and scalable operating system that can scale your business without you, so you can step out of the day-to-day and achieve your version of the entrepreneurial dream!

Over 8 Modules Let's Build Your New Operating System

Course Breakdown

Module 1

Preparing For Scale

To get Scale-able we must first…

  • Do business with the past
  • Uncover bottlenecks & opportunities
  • Clear the mind and make room for the new

After introducing the course, Ryan shares how to craft a “90-Day Gameplan” that will set the tone for exactly what you need to do to feel more pride, confidence, and excitement about your business.

Module 2

Mapping Your Value Engines

Checklists and processes are great when people use them…but no one ever does.

Instead, scalable companies have documented value engines. The things you do and execute on as a company, across multiple teams, people & platforms, to create value for both the business & your customers.

In the end, you’ll know exactly how your business creates value.

Module 3

Building Your Company Playbooks

Once you know how your company creates value, the things you do + execute as a company, you need to have a playbook for executing at scale.

By the end of this module, you’ll have a clear playbook to clone your best people and get more work done–in less time–the right way, the first time.

Module 4

Engineering a High-Output Team

How do we bake accountability into the essence and ethos of our organization?

  • Clear purpose
  • Clear context
  • Clear areas of accountability

In this session, we’ll give you the tools & strategies to eliminate finger-pointing and “that’s not my job…”

Module 5

Designing Your Company Scorecards

Together, we’ll create your weekly company dashboard to get everyone on the same page and aligned to the same growth targets. No more flying blind or your head buried in the sand…you’ll have ultimate clarity on the health of the business and which KPIs each department must be measured by to hit company goals.

Module 6

Communication Architecture

As your company grows, your most important task will be to establish and reinforce how information flows throughout your organization.

This week, we’ll establish a scalable meeting rhythm so the right information is shared with the right people at the right time! This allows both teams and individuals to make data-driven decisions that lead the company towards its stated goals and objectives.

Module 7

Creating a Clarity Compass

In order to predictably scale your business, you must know where you’re headed. Together, we’ll craft your “Clarity Compass” to:

  • Clarify your “why”
  • Make vision, mission, and values actionable
  • Create organizational clarity

Because ultimately, the biggest challenge companies face is misalignment.

Module 8
